ACT UP UNITED IN ANGER WITH NHS STUDENTS OVER GOVERNMENT SCRAPPING OF BURSARY SCHEMES – written by ACT UP LONDON activist Sami Cee
ACT UP London are standing in anger and solidarity with the students of the NHS who this week protested the removal of the NHS Bursary.
The Conservatives propose to swap out the crucial bursary that student nurses, midwives and other allied healthcare professionals receive for another student loan. This bursary is a fundamental lifeline to support those training in hospitals and healthcare settings across the country.
From 2017 David Cameron, Jeremy Hunt and George Osborne want the future workforce of the National Health Service finishing their training with debts of up to £50,000. A debt they will never be able to pay back. Nurses and midwives have already seen their pay decrease by 10% in real terms since the championing of austerity, and have now been told it will be frozen. These cuts are characteristic of the ever growing environment where undermining the NHS has become dangerously commonplace.
The NHS is important to all of us living in the UK, and is a gateway to essential treatment and services. ACT UP recognises the threat to student bursaries as part of the wider sustained attack on the NHS, including the proposed changes to junior doctors’ contracts, cuts to budgets, and tendering of services to the private sector.
Make no mistake, the ruling classes WANT a demoralised workforce in the NHS to spread their narrative of the public health service being unaffordable, unsustainable and ineffective!
ACT UP fights back against this! Healthcare is a RIGHT!
We believe in free and universal healthcare for all, where treatments are not withheld, and where those who deliver care are valued!
Proper recognition of carers is entirely possible, and their neglect a matter of choice by those who hold power.
HIV activist Louise Binder of International Community of Women Living with HIV said “I want to speak about POWER, the driving force behind the HIV epidemic today. Where power resides, the epidemic recedes. Where power does not, the virus thrives. Today the virus thrives.”
This rings true in all areas of healthcare, for everything from depression and cancers, to heart disease and diabetes.
We will not let our NHS be taken from us!
Power continues to save only those who can afford healthcare and leave those who can’t to die.
ACT UP! FIGHT BACK! FIGHT AIDS!
